Samantha has dedicated her career to care, starting in the NHS as a healthcare assistant over 14 years ago.

She works in Bristol City Council’s Care Direct team as one of a team of care professionals taking referrals to adult social services. At the weekend, Samantha works as a senior healthcare assistant at Southmead Hospital, providing care across a range of specialist wards. It comes with many challenges, but the rewards far outweigh them.

Samantha said: ‘Care Direct is so much more than a call centre. I spend time talking to people about care needs or occupational therapy requests. Sometimes people just want some information and advice as they’re not sure what to do next to support their individual needs – everyone is different.

‘I got into care as I’ve always wanted to make a difference to people’s lives and help them deal with life changing illnesses. To know I make a difference to people going through such a difficult journey is so rewarding. Seeing someone you have cared for walk out of the hospital after being admitted in such a critical condition is a wonderful feeling.

‘My advice to anyone thinking about working in care is to be patient, calm, understanding, kind and always remember to treat patients with dignity and respect regardless of background or condition.

‘I know I will always work in the care profession, one way or another. I’m forever proud to care!’
